About Painting en Plein Air in or around Portland, Oregon

Spring is a delightful time for plein air painting. The weather in Oregon’s springtime is somewhat unpredictable, and we’ll use anything it throws at us. Sunny or cloudy is never a problem, and for rain we have options too.

This class will be a rewarding class for all experience levels.  We’ll be working color and composition each session, painting in the beautiful Oregon outdoors. We’ll respond to the hills, trees, waters and skies authentically, attending to the geometries of the composition, the color set, the nuances of shape and color, the angle, the handling of the brush, the mood.

There will be lessons each session and feedback with one on one and group discussion. We’ll use a photo-sharing site to share and critique our work. There are countless ways to make a good painting.

Of special note:
Since mid 2020, group critiques and reviews have taken place through an online photo sharing site. This online photo site has had surprising benefits. It functions very simply, easy to use. Student painters and I upload photos of our paintings. We can all add remarks. I then drag the images into my photo software and can analyze and critique them, marking them with lines and arrows that make explicit the painting’s dynamics and its shortfalls. I also upload my own paintings, and paintings by great painters, often analyzed with arrows and descriptions. All this has had great benefits and we all seem to love it. More to the point, I see that people are learning faster. Everyone’s painting is improving! So happy!

The process has also almost doubled my time commitment with the class. The class tuition reflects this added benefit. Please contact me if you have any questions about this.

Locations depend on weather. When clear, there are many options. When wet, we’ll work under shelter or meet on zoom.

In studio or via Zoom: Reworking the subject through group critique, from which flow specific challenges based on composition, dark-light structure, color, tension, proportion, feeling, unity).  We will also be using an online photo sharing site to review and critique our work throughout the ten weeks.

Sites in or near Portland under consideration: Mt. Tabor, Rivervilla Park in Oak Grove, Rooster Rock, Sauvie Island ODFW viewing platform, and other sites with shelter. I’ve shortened this list to those sites that allow us maximum distance to work.
